Joseph Bielik is currently the woodwind caption head, movement choreographer, and student leadership coordinator with the Milton High School Marching Band. Since arriving at Milton, the band has become a regular Bands of America Regional finalist. Before being hired at Milton, Joey served as the woodwind caption head for 11 years at Collins Hill High School in Suwanee, Georgia. While at Collins Hill, the band won many grand championships at local competitions, was a regular finalist at the BOA Super Regional and other BOA Regionals, and was a BOA Grand Nationals semi-finalist. The Collins Hill Marching Band was also awarded the Sudler Shield for outstanding achievement in marching band.
Joey studied music education at the University of Georgia with a scholarship from the Hugh Hodgson School of Music. While at UGA, he performed with the Wind Ensemble and Wind Symphony as a clarinetist and keyboardist. He studied clarinet privately with Theodore Jahn, Dannene Drummond, and D. Ray McClellan. Joey also studied conducting privately with H. Dwight Satterewhite, John N. Culvahouse, Laura Motes-Stanley, and John Lynch as well as Scott Stewart of Emory University.
Joey had the honor of being selected as conductor of the Phantom Regiment Drum & Bugle Corps in 2003. He had the opportunity to learn and work with Sam Pilafian and Pat Sheridan, creators of The Breathing Gym. He also learned brass pedagogy from JD Shaw and Freddy Martin, percussion pedagogy from Paul and Sandy Rennick, and dance/visual design from Jude Boughton.
Since graduating from Phantom Regiment, Joey has been an instructor for the past 7 years at the Conducting and Leadership Camps held by Phantom Regiment throughout the country. He has had the opportunity to work with Andrea Brown of University of Michigan and Galen Karriker of the University of Akron.
Joey is extremely excited to be working with ALLIANCE Drum & Bugle Corps staff and members and is looking forward to getting the season started!!!
